Rex Rumsey, MBA Candidate Class of ‘25
What company did you intern with this summer?
This summer I interned at Medtronic. I was placed with the Cardiac Pacing Team in Minneapolis, MN.
What was your project this summer?
I worked with the Strategy team to determine how to best leverage Medtronic’s pacing portfolio across different customer segments. To do this, I spent the first 4 weeks analyzing US sales data to understand how device utilization differed across physician types, hospital settings, and geographies. Once completed, I interviewed customers to contextualize the data, learn about different customer segments, and identify barriers and new opportunities. Using these insights, I created a targeting strategy that could generate millions in incremental income and develop an immature market, all while accounting for risk, efficiency, and impact. To generate the NPV model, I used a Monte Carlo simulation to demonstrate why driving adoption from a particular customer was worthwhile and why the strategy is likely to work.
How did your manager facilitate growth over the course of the summer?
Ellen’s experience managing projects, generating stakeholder support, and anticipating business needs made a material difference on the project. Ellen went above and beyond to ensure that I had the opportunity to network within the company, observe surgeries, conduct interviews with physicians, test products, and understand the strategic narrative of the team, which accelerated learnings and helped me clearly communicate my insights to the strategy team, the commercial marketing team, and the R&D team.
Did anything about the internship surprise you?
When I was a Physical Therapist, I knew I was passionate about driving innovation in the healthcare industry, but it was an altogether different experience to work towards that end alongside brilliant colleagues that are eminent engineers, lawyers, physicians, and business professionals. I was surprised at how energizing these cross-functional conversations were and how collaborative decision-making can make 1+1=3, as new solutions are synthesized when the right people come together.
How did Kelley facilitate your success?
Kelley’s focus on business analytics and real client engagements proved to be essential. For example, during the Core, Kelley has multiple Quant courses that teach students how to interrogate data, make decisions using prioritization tools, and account for uncertainty (all of which were important for my project). In addition to this, the Business Marketing Academy and the Life Science Academy provided consulting-like projects during the year, which allowed students to conduct market research, create financial models, and present strategies to actual companies prior to their summer internships.
Rex received an internship offer from Medtronic. Congruatulations and best wishes to Rex as he finishes his final year at Kelley!
